The SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) is closely monitoring how the Town of Timmonsville is handling a problem that led to a major sewage spill, Sunday night.

The town's lift station on Main Street went down causing the pumps to stop, according to Jim Beasley with DHEC.

As a result, Beasley said, there was a significant overflow of sewage.

The town called in crews from the City of Florence who helped to fix the problem.

Timmonsville officials are now taking samples of water to determine where high levels of fecal matter remains.

Those results will tell them where additional cleanup is needed, Beasley said.

A sewer line cave in near the lift station is believed to have caused the station to shutdown.
