Shaquawan McGill, 17, is charged with Assault with Intent to Commit Criminal Sexual Conduct Third Degree.

Deputies say McGill tried to rape a 15-year-old-girl on an Horry County School District activity bus on January 15. A 14-year-old boy is also charged in the incident.

Both were arrested Wednesday afternoon.

The bus was traveling through Marion County as it was taking the Green Sea Floyds boys and girls basketball teams and cheerleaders to a game in Florence County when the incident happened, according to Captain Judy Barker with the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

McGill is a member of the basketball team.

McGill pulled down his pants, Barker said, but didn't expose himself to the girl.

He picked her up by the waist and moved her to a seat where he tried to put his hands down her pants, according to Barker.

She says the 14-year-old boy covered the girl's mouth, and the girl screamed and tried to fight back.

After a thorough investigation, Barker said, the sheriff's office found there was enough evidence to charge the teenagers.

McGill has been released from jail on a $40,000 bond. He's been placed on electronic monitoring.

The 14-year-old is in the custody in the SC Department of Juvenile Justice. He's expected to be brought back to Marion County for a detention hearing Friday afternoon.
