During his life, Travis Eiler raced. He raced for competition with cross country, but he also raced for spirituality with missionary work.
It was during the quest to share his spirit with others that he ran the race that would be his final.
Less than two weeks ago, while on a mission trip in Central Asia, 23-year-old Travis was found dead in his room suffocated with a plastic bag.
On Sunday, nearly 1,000 people showed up at Travis' alma mater of Socastee High to pay their respects to a young man who obviously touched so many in such a short time.
"Travis' words and life demonstrate to all of us that we do not know just how much our lives impact others and just how much time we have to do so," said Travis' former teacher, Bobby Chandler. "There's one thing I know for sure that Travis Eiler made his words and his actions count."
"Little hearts though safe and protected never contribute anything," said Barry Bouchillon. "On the other hand, ministering hearts though vulnerable are the kind of hearts that know the most joy and leave the biggest imprint on life."
During the memorial, Travis' father Eric asked everyone to follow his son's actions and words.
"I will carry on Travis' mission," said Eric while holding up a pair of Travis' old racing shoes he wore during cross country.
"Can you help me? Can you help me fill these shoes?"
Police continue to investigate Travis' death.
