With two tropical storms (Alberto and Beryl) already in the books, it may seem like the 2012 hurricane season has been under way for weeks. Since record keeping began in 1851, there have only been 3 seasons with two named storms before June 1st. Joining 2012 are the 1887 and 1908 seasons. How did those two season fair?
The 1887 season is in the record books as the third busiest season on record with 19 named storms, but NO tropical storms or hurricanes hit the South Carolina coast.
The 1908 season wasn't nearly as active with only had 10 named storms and, like 1887, not a single tropical storm or hurricane hit the South Carolina coast.
Bottom-line, there's no correlation between activity early in the season and what the season will be like as a whole. As I've always said, whether it's 5 or 25 storms, it's only a bad season if you get hit.
With an unusually strong trough near or over the eastern seaboard for the next 7-10 days, chances of any additional tropical systems popping up are highly unlikely!
