A lagoon overflowed at the Timmonsville Wastewater Treatment Plant this week.

According to Jim Beasley with the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), the overflow was from the facility's filter beds and is fully contained.

Beasley says there is no apparent threat to nearby waters.

He added that water samples have been taken and laboratory analysis is being performed to make sure there are no problems.

DHEC is working with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop a plan to further prevent further problems.

The EPA issued the permit for the Timmonsville Wastewater Treatment Plant.

In 2009, the EPA looked into possible violations at the plant. The agency could not tell NewsChannel 15 the details of the investigation because it involved its civil enforcement unit.
