The move that has been speculated for the better part of a month will finally become official this Monday. Former Coastal Carolina football coach David Bennett will be announced as Socastee's next athletic director at a Monday 10:00 am press conference. Bennett confirmed to WPDE Sports that he was approved by the Horry County School board and is excited about the opportunity to work directly with every student athlete at Socastee High.
"It's not about me," Bennett told WPDE Sports about his new job. "A chance to work with kids is what it's all about." Bennett replaces Roger Dixon, who will retire on July 31st. Bennett will oversee the entire Socastee athletic department and run the school's day to day sports operations.
Bennett was dismissed as Chanticleers head football coach on December 9th, 2011. Bennett led Coastal Carolina to four Big South Conference titles before he was relieved of his duties. He received a $925,000 buyout from CCU and recently served as a volunteer assistant coach on the Conway High golf team where his son, Jeb, played.
Tim Renfrow will remain the Socastee football head coach as Bennett oversees the entire Braves athletic program. The first day of high school football is this Friday along with all fall sports.
