The Waccamaw Warriors own a 70 point lead on Myrtle Beach heading into the spring sports season for the 2011/12 WPDE Zone Cup. The Zone Cup is awarded to the area high school with the best overall performance in varsity sports. The Warriors added 20 points in the winter sports season. Hartsville, Timmonsville and Johnsonville vaulted into the top five thanks to great performances in the high school basketball playoffs. A state championship is worth 100 Zone Cup points and the Timmonsville girls and Hartsville boys were able to claim that with state titles in Columbia on the hardwood.
Zone Cup Top 5 through the winter sports season:
1. Waccmaaw - 250
2. Myrtle Beach - 180
3. Hartsville - 160
3. Timmonsville - 160
5. Johnsonville - 150
There are ten state champions to be awarded in the spring sports season: (baseball, softball, boys track, girls track, boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse, boys soccer, girls soccer, boys tennis, boys golf) Hartsville has the #1 ranked team in 3A softball and is a traditional baseball power. Johnsonville is a traditional track power and should pick up points in both baseball and softball. Waccamaw and Myrtle Beach are poised to pick up points on the soccer pitch.
