Bill Haas beat Hunter Mahan on the third hole of a sudden death playoff at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, to win the PGA Tour Championship and the Fed-Ex Cup title. Haas, who was raised in Greer, South Carolina, won $1.44 millon for winning the tournament and a $10 million dollar bonus for capturing the PGA's four-tournament playoff series.
The 29-year old Haas made a miraculous par save by chipping out of the water on the second playoff hole. The former Wake Forest star began the week 25th in the Fed-Ex standings. The Tour Championship win vaulted him into first when all the points were added up. His father, Jay, won nine PGA tour events between 1978 and 1993.
Back in March of 2004, Haas was the first round leader at the General Jim Hackler Tournament played at TPC of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet. Haas, representing Wake Forest, finished tied for 17th.
Former Coastal Carolina golfer Dustin Johnson ended up 4th in the Fed-Ex standings after finishing tied for 23rd at the Tour Championship. Clemson product Jonathan Byrd was 27th in the Fed-Ex standings after finishing 30th at this week's event.
