More than 30-thousand fans turned out at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia on Saturday to watch the South Carolina Gamecocks final scrimmage of the spring. The Garnet squad topped the Black squad 21-17 behind three touchdown catches from DeAngelo Smith.
Dylan Thompson hit Smith on a 62 yard TD connection to start the scoring. Thompson threw for 168 yards but also had two interceptions. Connor Shaw, who is number one on the depth chart at quarterback, was 17 of 27 passing for 176 yards and a touchdown. Andrew Clifford, who is also competing at QB hit on 7 of 8 throws for 65 yards and an interception. Another QB, Seth Strickland, completed 6 of 8 passes for 80 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Demario Jeffery led all tacklers with eight stops. Jimmy Legree had two interceptions on the day. The Gamecocks will return to practice next week for two more workouts on Tuesday and Thursday at the "Proving Grounds."
Suspended quarterback Stephen Garcia missed the spring game. When asked about Garcia, Head Coach Steve Spurrier said, "We're hoping Stephen is right back here on campus Monday going to class. The best thing for Stephen is he needs to graduate." Garcia would graduate in May if he passes all his final semester classes, according to Spurrier.
