This Sunday, the MLB Futures All-Star game will take place in Anaheim to get the All-Star festivities started. The game is a showcase of the top young talent in minor league baseball. Myrtle Beach Pelicans pitcher Julio Teheran will play for the World All-Stars.
He's 19-years old. He weighs only 160 pounds and throws a fastball that has been clocked as high as 97 miles an hour. Julio Teheran first picked up a baseball in Cartagena , Colombia at the age of five. Outside of listening to Latin music and fooling around on his PlayStation, Teheran's only focus in life is his love of baseball.
In just six starts before the all-star break, Teheran went 3-1 with a 1.38 earned run average. It was good enough to earn him a spot on the Carolina League all-star roster and also a spot in the Futures Game. The Atlanta Braves thought so much of him -- they gave him an 850-thousand dollar signing bonus. Put simply, Teheran gets batters out with a blazing fastball and "knee buckling" breaking pitch. He averages more than 10 strikeouts per nine innings. His favorite players are former pitchers John Smoltz and Curt Schilling. Someday perhaps Teheran will follow in their footsteps as an impact pitcher in the big leagues.
