(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina backup quarterback Reid McCollum is considering a transfer to a lower-division school so he can get on the field right away.  Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier says the freshman told an assistant that he is researching other schools and wants to go somewhere he can play immediately.

McCollum is the only quarterback other than sophomore starter Stephen Garcia to throw a pass for the Gamecocks last season. McCollum played in mop-up roles against Florida Atlantic and South Carolina State, completing four of his six passes for 39 yards and a touchdown.  Under NCAA rules, players who transfer from a Football Bowl Subdivision, or Division I-A, school to a Football Championship Subdivision, or I-AA, school can participate in the next season.
