The 9th annual WPDE Hoop Zone banquet honored the top 40 players in the WPDE viewing area at the Holiday Inn West in Myrtle Beach. For the first time ever, a freshman hoisted the trophy as Myrtle Beach guard Khadijah Sessions captured the 2009 WPDE Miss Hoop Zone. The Mister Hoop Zone winner was Mullins point guard Eric Smith.
The 2009 podium featured nine outstanding basketball players. Smith was on 15 of 20 ballots including 7 first place votes and 35 overall points to top Tashon Fredrick. The Hemingway Tiger finished second with 21 total points. Wilson guard Shahmel Brackett finished third and 2008 WPDE Mister Hoop Zone Kinard Gadsden-Gilliard was fourth.
Youth served notice on the girls side with Sessions picking up 8 first place votes and 33 total points. Khadijah's cousin, Ramon Sessions of the Milwaukee Bucks won two Mister Hoop Zone's during his time at Myrtle Beach. Carolina Forest senior Lakeitha Alston finished second with 20 points. Three sophomores took spots three through five in close voting: Hartsville's Jasmine Phillips was third with 15 points, Darlington guard Jazz Green was 4th with 14, and Marion's Geneika Brantley had 13 points to finish in fifth. That trio will be back for two more years to try and take Miss Hoop Zone away from Sessions.
