Justin Durant and the Lions roared to victory in Sunday opener.
Week One of the NFL season got off to a great start for former Wilson High star Justin Durant. The Detroit linebacker led the Lions with 12 tackles, including two for a loss, in a 27-23 victory over the St. Louis Rams.
Marlboro County High product Robert Ayers had two tackles for the Denver Broncos in a 31-19 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Ex-Lamar High star John Abraham made three tackles for the Atlanta Falcons, including one sack and one pass defended, in a 40-24 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The 13-year veteran also forced a fumble. Falcons teammate Cliff Matthews out of Cheraw High had one tackle.
Former Wilson High star and WPDE Zoneman winner Lawrence Timmons made four tackles for the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 31-19 loss at Denver.
Former Coastal Carolina fullback Mike Tolbert had one carry for two yards and caught three passes for eight yards for the Carolina Panthers in a 16-10 loss at Tampa Bay.
Another CCU grad, Josh Norman, made four tackles in his NFL debut with the Carolina Panthers.
Five year NFL veteran wide receiver Jerome Simpson from Coastal Carolina is on the Minnesota Vikings reserve/suspended list to start the season. He was suspended for the first three games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Robert Geathers, Jr. from Carvers Bay High, did not accumulate any stats in a 44-13 Monday Night Football loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Geathers is nursing a knee injury.
