Devontea Washington had 21 points and Hartsville used relentless pressure defense throughout to score a 59-46 win over Southside on Saturday night in Columbia to win the South Carolina boys 3A state championship. Hartsville leaned on Washington early as he scored 12 points in the first quarter that gave the Red Foxes a 19-9 lead. Southside cut the deficit to 6 at the half, but Hartsville was able to maintain a double digit lead for most of the second half.
Jaylen Shaw and Tevin Prescott played most of the game in foul trouble, but it didn't play a factor. Shaw and Prescott had three fouls each in the first half and picked up their 4th fouls in the third quarter. Shaw, a WPDE All-Hoop Zone selection finished with 14 points.
It's the Red Foxes first ever state basketball championship and first appearance in the title game since 1952. Aric Samuel, a former Red Foxes player, won his second state title as a coach - he guided Hunter Kinard Tyler to a state championship in 2005.
