Jordan Lyles threw seven shutout innings in his big league debut as the Houston Astros topped the Chicago Cubs 7-3 on Tuesday night.  A throwing error by Lyles in the 8th sparked a three run 8th inning for the Cubs.  He left the game with 7 innings pitched, 2 runs, 1 earned run, four strikeouts and no walks.  The Astros would score 6 runs in the top of the 9th to get the win.  Lyles gets a no decision.

At 20 years and 224 days, Lyles became the youngest player in the major leagues when he made his debut as a Houston Astros starter at Wrigley Field.   Lyles scattered five hits over the first seven innings.  His first major league strikeout came at the expense of Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano who struck out twice.  The second strikeout had Zambrano break his bat over his leg.  Another first for Lyles was his first major league hit - a liner to right in the top of the 7th inning.

In the 8th, Lyles gave up a leadoff double to Geovany Soto.  Then a bunt by Tyler Colvin saw Lyles commit an error, allowing pinch runner Brad Snyder to score and tie the game at one.  That was the end of Lyles outing as he threw a total of 92 pitches, 62 for strikes.  Lyles will start this Sunday on the west coast against the San Diego Padres.  Following that start, Wandy Rodriguez is scheduled to come off the disabled list and the Astros will decide if they keep Lyles in the starting rotation or if they will send him back to AAA Oklahoma City.   Lyles had nearly 25 family and friends from Hartsville in Chicago to watch his debut in the big leagues.
