Lucas Glover won the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina in a sudden-death playoff over former Clemson teammate Jonathan Byrd on Sunday. Glover parred the first extra hole to win for the first time on the PGA Tour since the 2009 U.S. Open, a 41 tournament drought. Byrd missed the green on the first playoff hole and chipped 25 feet past the hole on his third shot to take him out of contention.
Byrd trailed by one stroke on the final hole of regulation. But he sank a 14 foot birdie to put him into the playoff with Glover at 15-under par. Glover shot a final round of 3-under par 69 while Byrd shot even par.
Glover, a 31-year old Greenville native and high school all-american at Wade Hampton, pockets a first place check for $1,170,000. Byrd earned $702,000 for his second place finish. Glover and Byrd played together at Clemson in 1998, 1999 and 2000. It is the first time that two Clemson golfers have finished in first and second place at the same PGA Tour event.
Greer, South Carolina native Bill Haas finished 13-under for the tournament for a fourth place finish in Charlotte.
