Stony Brook's Miguel Maysonet scored the game winning TD in the fourth quarter against CCU.
In the end, it was another loss for Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers had a chance to beat the nation's 11th ranked FCS team until the final minute, before dropping a 27-21 decision to the Stony Brook Seawolves at Brooks Stadium in Conway, South Carolina.
Stony Brook running back Miguel Maysonet rushed 26 times for a career-high 233 yards and two touchdowns to lead the New York squad to a come-from-behind victory.
Coastal Carolina took a first quarter lead on the opening drive on an Aramis Hillary 24-yard TD pass to DeMario Bennett. Stony Brook tied the game on a Kyle Essington 10-yard scoring strike to Jordan Gush.
CCU took the lead again in the second quarter. Jeremy Height scored on a 26-yard run. But Stony Brook answered midway through the quarter on an Essington 18-yard TD toss to Kevin Norrell. The score was tied at halftime.
Stony Brook took their first lead of the game in the third quarter. Maysonet capped a 66-yard drive with a 2-yard TD run to give the Seawolves a 21-14 advantage.
Coastal came back to tie the game with 12:08 left in the game with Height's second TD run. Later in the fourth quarter, Maysonet gave Stony Brook a 27-21 lead. The extra point was no good.
CCU had three more drives late in the game but came up empty. With just over two minutes to play, Hillary threw complete to Matt Hazel for four yards. But Hazel fumbled and Stony Brook recovered.
Stony Brook could not run out the clock, and CCU got one more chance. Hillary threw four straight incomplete passes and Stony Brook held on for a six point win to improve their record to 6-1 overall, 2-0 in the Big South Conference.
Former WPDE All-Zone selection Travis Small had a solid game for Coastal. The former Cheraw Braves star ran the ball seven times for 32 yards.
The Coastal defense kept the Chants in the game until the end. Pernell Williams led CCU with 13 tackles, Quinn Backus had twelve.
Following the loss, Coastal Carolina head coach Joe Moglia said, "I'm really disappointed we didn't come away with the win. There was just too many penalties (7 for 63 yards) and the fumble in the latter part of the game. You just can't have that. But we played a very good football team today and we certainly held our own."
Coastal has now lost four straight games for the first time in program history. The Chanticleers fall to 2-4 overall, 0-1 in the Big South Conference.
The Chanticleers next game will be in Lexington, Virginia against the VMI Keydets on Saturday, October 20. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
