Guy Daniels passed away in 1999, but his memory was still alive at the 13th annual Guy Daniel's surfoff competition.

Over the weekend 150 surfers took to the waves to battle it out.

Veteran participants shared good memories of Guy.

"I used to share waves with Guy Daniels back in the day at Surfside Pier," said surfer Rob Fennel.

Fennel used to give Guy pointers on his surfing.

"In surfing it's kind of funny, the older surfer guy gives the younger guys a hard time and at the same time, we bring them up under our wing," said Fennel.

Daniels passed away at the age of 19, but he got his chance to mentor other surfers.

"Man he was awesome, he was a lot older than we were, but he took care of us, took us surfing all the time," said cousin, Marsh Stalnaker. "We were little guy, looking out for us, just a solid guy, a good man."

Eighty percent of the proceeds from the Surf-off go towards scholarships for Horry and Georgetown graduating seniors.

In the last 13 years, the organization has given out over $53,000 in scholarships.

"I think this is something that he'd look down on and would really enjoy seeing all his friends getting together," said Fennel.
