NASCAR has suspended A.J. Allmendinger.
NASCAR has temporarily suspended driver A.J. Allmendinger for failing a random drug test. He was pulled from Saturday night's Coke Zero 400 race.
Sam Hornish, Jr. drove the 22 Dodge in the Daytona race in place of Allmendinger. Hornish finished 33rd after he cut a tire on lap 81, causing him to hit the wall.
According to NASCAR rules, Allmendinger has 72 hours to request another test. If he does not test again, or the test is positive, the suspension would become indefinite.
Allmendinger's Penske Racing team has indicated that they will work with NASCAR through the process. He is the first driver on the Cup level to test positive since Jeremy Mayfield in 2009.
Allmendinger is 23rd in the Sprint Cup points race. The Dinger, as he is known by fellow drivers, has never won on any level of NASCAR. He has won two poles and has 29 top ten finishes in Cup.
