22 game NCAA Tournament win streak is over
Gamecocks will face Kent State in an elimination game on Wednesday at 8 p.m. EST
The Arkansas Razorbacks defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks 2-1 at the College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska on Monday night. The loss moves South Carolina into the losers bracket and ends their record 22 game win streak in NCAA Tournament play and twelve game win streak at the CWS.
Arkansas (46-20) got on the board first. Dominic Ficociello doubled to bring home Tim Carver in the first inning. Then in the fourth, Matt Vinson singled to get Brian Anderson across and make it 2-0. Gamecocks starting pitcher Colby Holmes (7-2) out of Conway High, lasted only 3.2 innings allowing four hits, two walks and two earned runs. Holmes took the loss.
South Carolina (46-18) rallied in the fifth. Evan Marzilli tripled to center field to score Chase Vergason. Tanner English, a St. James High graduate, made two spectacular catches in the field. He was hitless in four at bats.
Arkansas starting pitcher Ryne Stanek pitched six innings. He allowed just three hits and one run to pick up the victory. Stanek and Barrett Astin allowed only four Gamecocks hits.
South Carolina will play the Kent State Golden Flashes on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. EST in an elimination game. Arkansas moved into the bracket two finals on Thursday and await the winner of the South Carolina-Kent State game.
