Former Washington Redskins wide receiver Charlie Brown will host two free football camps in Florence and Darlington. The camps are being sponsored through the Brown-McCrone Foundation, A Lifetime of Giving Back.
Brown attended St. John's High School in Charleston before playing football for South Carolina State University. After graduation, he was drafted to the Washington Redskins and helped lead them to a victory in Super Bowl XVII in his rookie season. He also played for the Atlanta Falcons.
Brown has taught at public schools across South Carolina and Georgia. He's also coached football in the high school, collegiate and professional ranks. He is now retired and spends a lot of time mentoring young athletes.
The camps will be held at Wilson High School on June 11th and 12th and at Darlington High school on June 14th and 15th.
Student athlete ages 8 to a rising high school senior are eligible to take part in the camp. "I want to make a difference in my community. I have so much football knowledge and I want to share it with kids. Many of them can't afford to attend college football camps, so I know they'll benefit from my free camps," said Brown.
The two day camp will be headed up by Brown, local coaches, and coaches who are former and current NFL players. The camp will focus on the basic fundamentals of football giving youngsters the tools they need to become successful athletes.
Motivational speakers will also talk with campers to stress the importance of education. Brown said," I've seen a lot of talented and skilled football players, but they didn't get far on the field because they weren't succeeding in the classroom."
Brown is seeking to help as many student athletes as he can. For more information on the free camps, contact Charlie Brown at (803) 479-3635.
