St. James Sharks pitcher Anders DeShields has made a verbal commitment to play for the College of Charleston. The junior left-hander will be part of the Cougars 2014 class.

DeShields transferred to St. James from Byrnes High this year and played the last half of the season with the Sharks. The Class 3A All-State selection was impressive on the mound with a 6-1 record and 1.30 earned run average.

His fastball has been clocked as high as 87 miles an hour. The consensus among college scouts is that he will add weight to his 170 pound frame to increase his velocity at the next level.

DeShields chose the College of Charleston over South Carolina and Coastal Carolina.
