The South Carolina women's basketball team defeated the 18th ranked North Carolina Lady Tar Heels 79-48 at the Carolinas Challenge held at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center on Sunday.

South Carolina scored the first 11 points of the contest and never trailed. La'Keisha Sutton led the Lady Gamecocks with 21 points. Markeshia Grant added 20.

The Lady Heels entered the contest as the highest scoring team in the nation, averaging more than 87 points a contest. The Lady Gamecocks held the Heels to its lowest point total in nearly two years. For the Lady Gamecocks, it was the third largest margin of victory over a nationally ranked team in school history.

North Carolina's last loss at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center came ten years ago in a 30-point loss to South Carolina. Head Coach Dawn Staley's Lady Gamecocks record improved to 9-2. North Carolina is now 7-2.
