North Carolina beat South Carolina 26-19 in the 75th annual Shrine Bowl football all-star game on Saturday in Spartanburg, South Carolina, in a game that matches the top seniors in both states.
Lexington High's Shaq Roland was named South Carolina Offensive MVP after ending the showcase game with 143 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Roland is a South Carolina Gamecocks commitment.
Todd Gurley from Tarlboro was named North Carolina Offensive MVP. Gurley ran for two scores and finished with 119 yards on 19 rushes. Mallard Creek's Jamel Harbison also scored on a 94-yard kickoff return for North Carolina.
South Carolina led 13-6 at halftime. But North Carolina scored 20 straight points in the second half to secure a 26-19 victory. It is the Tar Heel State's first win at the Shrine Bowl since 2009. South Carolina leads the all-time series 41-30-4.
Conway's Chuck Jordan was the head coach of the South Carolina All-Stars. Dillon's Kwinton Smith, Hemingway's Jabril Solomon, Cheraw's Marvin Lauderdale, Conway's Robert Nelson and Daquarius Wilson from Myrtle Beach High were five WPDE All-Zone selections who played for South Carolina.
