The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers clinched their first winning season in five years with a 45-38 victory at arch-rival Charleston Southern on Saturday.

With the game tied 31-all in the fourth quarter, former WPDE All-Zone star Travis Small, from Cheraw High, scored on a seven yard touchdown run to give Coastal Carolina the lead for good. Marcus Whitener led CCU in rushing with 106 yards on 13 carries.

Coastal Carolina quarterback Aramis Hillary completed 14 of 24 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns. Hillary also ran for 27 yards and a score.

Coastal's Jamie Childers caught four passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, CCU rolled up 253 rushing yards against the winless Buccaneers. The Chants now have a 38-4 lifetime record when rushing for 200 yards or more in a game.

Coastal trailed 21-14 at halftime. The Chants scored 31 second half points to win the 83 point shootout at Buccaneer Field before a crowd of 2,933.

Josh Norman led the defense with eight tackles and one pass break-up. The Coastal defense gave up a whopping 514 total yards, but forced four turnovers.

Charleston Southern quarterback Richard Mounce completed 27 of 48 passes for 397 yards and 4 TD's. But he threw two interceptions including one by CCU's Philip George, as the Buccaneers were marching for the potential tying score with 2:14 left.

Coastal Carolina improves to a record of 6-4 overall, and finished 3-3 in the Big South Conference.

CCU will close out the season on the road at Western Carolina, a non-conference game next Saturday, November 19 at 2 p.m. against the Catamounts in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
