The 8th ranked Clemson Tigers won a 56-45 shootout over the Maryland Terrapins in College Park, Maryland on Saturday. Clemson freshman Sammy Watkins set a school record with 345 all-purpose yards in the Tigers victory.
Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd completed 26 of 38 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns. One of them, to Cheraw native Jaron Brown put Clemson in front late in the game. But Maryland would take a 45-42 lead in the fourth quarter. Watkins returned a kickoff 89 yards to put the Tigers ahead for good.
Andre Ellington led the Clemson rushing atttack with 213 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns. Watkins had eight catches for 105 yards and two TD's. Brown had four grabs for 35 yards.
On defense, Lake View High product Quandon Christian had seven tackles for Clemson. West Florence grad Malliciah Goodman made four stops.Jonathan "Tig" Willard out of Loris made three tackles, and Lateek Townsend from Marlboro County had one tackle.
Clemson improved to 7-0 overall, 4-0 in the ACC. The Tigers will host the North Carolina Tar Heels next Saturday, October 22 at Death Valley. Kickoff time has not been established.
