Cam Richards won the NSSA Nationals men's open division.
Cam Richards from Garden City, South Carolina was crowned king of the surfing world after he won the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) National Championship in Huntington Beach, California on Sunday. The 15-year old honor student from St. James High caught two big waves in the finals and pulled off some impressive air reverses to propel him to victory.
Richards scored a 12.20 in the championship round. He beat out Californian Taylor Clark who finished second with a score of 11.60. The NSSA Nationals is recognized as the most prestigious amateur event in the United States. Richards is the first East Coast surfter to win the men's open division championship. He was named to the U.S Team and will compete at the next World Surfing Championships.
At the age of 10, Richards became the youngest surfer in the world to win prize money at a sanctioned pro surfing event. He will head to Indonesia later this month to train on larger waves off the coast of Bali.
Back in June, Richards won the Quicksilver King of the Groms and a check for $900. His next big event is the King of the Groms Global Finals in France in October. Cam said, "I can't wait! It's gonna be sick."
