Garden City's Cam Richards finished in third place in the under-16 division at the USA Surfing Championships at Lower Trestles in California on Sunday.

The 15-year old St. James High student had the top scores in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals. In the title round, Richards finished in third place. Santa Barbara's Parker Coffin took home the top prize. Richards was able to catch three waves but not the big one he wanted in the final heat.

Earlier this month, he won the Quicksilver Grom Fest and will continue in the next round of that competition later this summer at the King of the Groms World Championships in France. But first,  Richards will continue his California tour by competing at the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) Nationals in Huntington Beach.
