The WPDE Zone Cup levels the playing field for every varsity sport in high school athletics. Cross Country and Competitive Cheerleading have the same point value as football and basketball. The format, which is similar to the NCAA's all-sports competition, determines the best overall performance by a high school in varsity sports.
Since its inception, Myrtle Beach and Waccamaw have dominated the competition for the Zone Cup, But in 2010/2011, the Saint James Sharks captured the trophy. The final week of the sports season saw the Sharks in third place trailing Myrtle Beach and Waccamaw, but a second place finish in the 3A boys golf state championship vaulted Saint James into second place and then the 3A baseball title on the final day of competition clinched the Cup for the Sharks.
Saint James athletic director Paula Lee accepted the trophy in front of assembled student athletes on Wednesday at Saint James High School.
Five Saint James teams scored over 80 percent of the Sharks Zone Cup points, highlighted by the baseball team's state title.
