(AP) -- MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - South Pointe defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has been named this year's Mr. Football in South Carolina. Clowney received the honor Friday from the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association.
The 6-foot-6, 255-pound senior had 162 tackles, 29½ sacks, caused 11 fumbles and scored five defensive touchdowns this season. The Stallions also put him in the backfield and he had 20 carries for 274 yards and nine touchdowns this season.
South Pointe went 38-6 during Clowney's three varsity seasons, winning one state title in Class 4A Division II in 2008. Clowney is considered one of the top high school prospects in the country and says he is considering Alabama, LSU and South Carolina and Clemson.
Myrtle Beach quarterback Everett Golson was also a Mr. Football finalist. Clowney's South Pointe team lost to Golson and Myrtle Beach in the 3A State Championship game. Clowney told WPDE NewsChannel 15 that he would rather have the 3A title than the Mr. Football trophy, although he says he is pleased to take home the individual honor as top player in the Palmetto State.
