Western Illinois beat Coastal Carolina 17-10 in the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs on Saturday afternoon in Conway. It was the first time CCU had ever hosted a home playoff game. Matt Barr's second rushing TD of the game with 1:50 remaining put Western Illinois on top for good.
Coastal quarterback Zach MacDowall threw four interceptions including one in the final minute with CCU driving for a potential game-tying score. The Chanticleers turned the ball over five times despite rolling up 462 yards of total offense to 385 for the Leathernecks. CCU also missed a 29 yard field goal in the second half.
Dominique Davenport led the Chanticleers defense with two interceptions and made seven tackles.
Coastal Carolina ends the season with a 6-6 record. Western Illinois (8-4) advances to play at Appalachian State in round two of the FCS playoffs.
