Ray Tanner has always said that he feels he has the best job in the country and would like to stay at South Carolina forever.
A new contract aims to achieve that goal.
Tanner will be rewarded for his national championship season with a multi-year contract extension and hefty raise the next time the USC Board of Trustees can meet, a source has told GamecockCentral.com.
The approval was actually scheduled for Aug. 24, but a last-minute postponement pushed it back. Regardless, the Board is in full vote to grant Tanner a deserved prize and all that remains to do is to officially pass the resolution.
The coach will be rewarded with a deal worth $510,000 per year, with additional incentives that if maxed out, would total an extra $255,000 per year. Tanner will receive $210,000 in base salary, $100,000 in supplemental salary and $200,000 for TV/radio per season.
Tanner's previous deal, which ran through 2012, was worth $160,000 per year in base salary, $100,000 for TV/radio and an $85,000 bonus for each contract year he completed. The coach also made $90,000 in incentives last year, including $50,000 for winning the title.
He also has a $10,000-per-year deal with Under Armour and a $120,000-per-year deal with Easton. Easton has incentive clauses in its current contract with Tanner that can total $37,500 per year.
Tanner has served 14 years at USC and has taken the Gamecocks to the NCAA Regionals 12 times. His teams have won 634 games, with four SEC East championships, two regular-season SEC championships and one SEC tournament championship, and has advanced to the College World Series four times.
Tanner won his 1,000th career game and his 600th game at USC in 2009. He is 130 wins away from passing June Raines for the most wins in school history, and if he keeps up his average (45.3 wins per year), he would set the mark during the 2013 season.
USC begins fall practice on Friday.
