Palmetto Pigskin's East Clarendon Preview
Dwayne Howell roamed the sidelines in Turbeville for 20 seasons from 1986 to 2005. He spent one season at Lee Central in 2007, but now is ready to come back out of retirement and lead the East Clarendon Wolverines.
“I just missed the game, to be honest with you,” Howell said. “When you’ve been around it as long as I have, and you get out of it you miss the game. This is home, too and I miss home.” Howell used to wear many hats during his first stint at EC, from athletic director to to teach to even mowing the fields. Now, he’s just worried about coaching football.
Howell sees one thing as a major positive and that's speed. He says it's the most speed he's seen in the 20 plus years he's been at EC. Two way play will be a key as Larry Brown will be the single back and looking to make things happen at linebacker. Chris McGill is another player who has shown promise. The offense will undergo an overhaul to utilize the speed. Rayvon Kersey will be part of a wide receiving corps as Carlos Hickson moves from running back to QB. The skill players respect Howell knowing the success he enjoyed winning 121 games during his time with the Wolverines.
The change in offense is needed. The Wolverines were shutout four times and scored just one TD in five games. With all starters back and just nine seniors in this year's class, there's an opportunity for EC to gel over the next couple of years.
The Wolverines have six home games. The Friday night lights will shine in Turbeville for five straight weeks, but then EC closes out the 2010 campaign with three straight road games.
