Palmetto Pigskin's Saint James Preview
It appears as if two Sharks are better than one at Saint James when it comes to running the offense. Heading into the season it appears as if the quarterback duties will be shared between Chase Smith and Carl Buddin. Both players would prefer to have just one QB, but unless one distances himself from the other in August workouts, it will stay a platoon system. The Sharks “Jet”offense will be grounded for more of a spread attack.
“It’s not that big of a change,” Smith said. “We’re just going to try and spread it out a bit, gonna throw it more.”
At PPP/End Zone Media Day, six Saint James Sharks filled out information sheets. When asked who was going to be the breakout star in 2010, every Shark answered Tyler Creech. Look for Creech to be the top target in the Sharks offense.
The Sharks closed out 2009 on a six game losing streak. One area that must be improved is on the defensive side of the ball. Saint James gave up over 28 points per game last year. LB Nuji Holmes is back and determined to see the defensive unit improve.
“We are really hungry because we shouldn’t of had all those touchdowns scored on us,” Holmes said. “It was just a couple of mental mistakes, really.”
Billy Hurston has been with the Sharks since the very beginning. On the first day of practice he was spending time on the JV field with a group of freshman and sophomores who he thinks will give Saint James football a very bright future. The Sharks “B” team joined great success and now this group will not only jump right into JV ball, but get a chance to contribute on Friday nights.
“We’ve had the best summer we’ve ever had,” Hurston said. “We have some talented freshman coming in, a group of sophomores that will play varsity. Even some of those freshman that run will have to come in and help our secondary. We’re going to have to be very aggressive and run good angles.”
