Palmetto Pigskin's Wilson Preview
The Maleik McCall era is over at Wilson High. The talented quarterback kept the rich tradition of outstanding signal callers in Tiger-town. Chipper Smith hopes to keep the tradition going when he goes under center.
“I learned a lot from Maleik McCall,” Smith said. “He taught me a lot things during practice as well as during the season. I run the ball more than he does, but we have similar games.”
Smith is going to have plenty of help surrounding him - starting with a great 1-2 punch in the backfield. Devin Borden and Adray Montgomery should share 50/50 of the carries. The duo combined for 910 yards on the ground and 16 Td's. That's impressive numbers considering how much Wilson likes to throw the ball. Justin Kelly had 33 catches for 500 yards and 4 Td's last year - those numbers should go up. Perhaps the biggest strength of the team is on the line with juniors Trez Mixon and Brandon C. King.
Darryl Page that is always active around the ball and quick to make a turnover. Wilson will switch from four DB’s to three to utilize its athleticigot a great draw with a pair of Kings. Make that a pair of Brandon Kings. Brandon K. King is the leader of the Wilson Dark Side defense sm up front.
Wilson looked to be on its way to the post-season after a 15-12 win against Camden, but proceeded to lose to Marlboro County and Darlington in the final two weeks of the season to miss out on the playoffs.
The Tigers get set to move and take Lake City's place in the beach region - the conference opener on Thursday night, September 30th has the Myrtle Beach Seahawks travelling to Florence.
“We’re capable of doing big things this year,” Brandon K. King said. “Coming into the beach region and we’re ready for it.”
