Conway Preview FS

Palmetto Pigskin's Conway Preview:

A down year at Conway is a rare occurrence. That's why the 2010 Tigers have to be hungry to come back from a 5 win campaign.
“In this business, if you stay in it long enough you’re going to see you’re going to get the good, the bad and the in between,’ head coach Chuck Jordan said.  “I think we’ll see a group that’s worked hard and improved.  We’ll see how that plays out on the playing field.”
It's rare to see a freshman starting in varsity football. It's even more rare to see a freshman QB play in the varsity ranks - that's what Mykal Moody did last year and he showed great promise with the ability to leave the pocket and run. Moody provided over 2,000 yards of offense last year - 1,100 plus in the air and over 900 on the ground.  With 8 TD passes and 9 interceptions, Moody should improve on those numbers and become and even more complete quarterback.   The offensive line is paced by 6’3”, 320 lb. senior Josh Holden who goes by the nickname of “Big Country”.
Six starters are back on a Conway defense that puts a premium on speed. Kerwin Johnson is an athletic defensive end who will try and deliver a spark in the trenches.
Once again, Conway will get ready for region play with a tough non-conference slate featuring matchups against two Charleston powers in Wando and Summerville along with tilts against Myrtle Beach and Marlboro County.
Double digit wins are the measure of a good season in Conway.  From 2001 through 2008 the Tigers won 89 games, an average of just over 11 wins a season.  It may be unrealistic for the 2010 Tigers to get to that level, but they should take a big step up from five wins and set the stage for a return to prominence in 4A.
