NFL Week 15: Tolbert gets revenge in Panthers win, plus other local performers

Mike Tolbert scored a pair of touchdowns against his former team, and led the Carolina Panthers to a 31-7 win over the San Diego Chargers.

Tolbert played his first four seasons in San Diego after he was signed as a free agent out of Coastal Carolina. Tolbert became a free agent again, following the 2011 season. He said the Chargers offered him plenty of money to stay, but that the San Diego front office angered him during negotiations. Tolbert was signed by the Panthers in March.

Tolbert was asked if he had a chip on his shoulder to beat San Diego, Big Mike said, "“Absolutely. A whole bag of chips. There was a whole bag of chips.”

Tolbert had nine carries for 40 yards and two TD's against San Diego. He also caught two passes for 24 yards. Another former CCU star, Josh Norman, made one tackle for the Panthers.

In other NFL action, ex-Lamar High lineman John Abraham had two tackles for the Atlanta Falcons in a 34-0 victory over the New York Giants.

Former Coastal Carolina wide receiver Jerome Simpson had four catches for 27 yards for the Minnesota Vikings in a 36-22 win over the St. Louis Rams.

Marlboro County High product Robert Ayers had one sack and two quarterback hits for the Denver Broncos in a 34-17 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Buffalo Bills back-up quarterback Tyler Thigpen out of Coastal Carolina completed 3-of-5 passes for 30 yards in a 50-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

2003 WPDE Zoneman winner Lawrence Timmons, who played high school football at Wilson, had six tackles, including a sack for the Pittsburgh Steelers in a 27-24 overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Another Wilson grad, Justin Durant, had three tackles for the Detroit Lions in a 38-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

On Thursday night, former Carvers Bay standout Robert Geathers, Jr. had two tackles for the Cincinnati Bengals in a 34-13 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.
