Coastal Carolina is on the verge of making a third consecutive appearance in a post-season basketball tournament. The CollegeInsider.com Tournament field will officially be announced on Sunday, but matchups have begun to leak on the internet and the Chanticleers are expected to face Old Dominion in the first round in Norfolk, Virginia.
WPDE Sports contacted Cliff Ellis on Thursday night. The Chants head coach confirmed that the CollegeInsider.com committee is showing a strong interest in CCU facing a team from the Colonial Athletic Association. Earlier on Thursday, Georgia State announced that they will host Tennessee Tech in the first round of the CIT. George Mason, another CAA school, announced that they will not participate in the CBI or CIT and will only take an NIT bid. That leaves Old Dominion, who finished 20-13, and 13-5 in the CAA. The Monarchs are coming off two consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, beating Notre Dame in 2010 and winning the CIT in 2009.
The first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament will take place Tuesday March 13th through Thursday March 15th. The field will feature 24 teams from mid-major conferences. Thus far, nine teams of the 24 teams have been revealed in the CIT field: Coastal Carolina, Old Dominion, Georgia State, Indiana State, Mercer, Oakland, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech, and USC Upstate.
