The South Carolina Gamecocks now have a 5-0 record after beating Elon for a second straight day in Columbia. USC beat Elon 3-2 before a crowd of 7,606 at Carolina Stadium. Three different Gamecocks pitcheers combined for 16 strikeouts. Matt Price picked up his first win as a starter. Forrest Koumas was credited with the save. Tanner English, who played at St. James High in Murrells Inlet, had two hits and scored a run in South Carolina's win.
The Clemson Tigers bounced back from a Friday loss to the Maine Black Bears. Clemson rallied to beat Maine 9-5 before a crowd of 5,340 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Spencer Kieboom keyed a five-run fifth inning with a 3-run homer for the Tigers. Clemson is now 3-2 on the season.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers continue to struggle in the early part of their baseball schedule. Virginia Tech beat CCU 3-1 despite a 10 strikeout performance from Chanticleers starting pitcher Josh Conway. CCU has lost three of their first five games to start the year. A crowd of only 602 fans attended the contest, played at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach. Coastal Carolina will finish the weekend as host of the Baseball at the Beach Tournament with a game against N.C. State on Sunday at 3 p.m.
