(AP) -- GOOSE CREEK, S.C. - Berkeley County sheriff's deputies have found the remains of more than 200 dogs behind a home in Goose Creek.

Deputies say 45 dogs in very poor condition were rescued from the home earlier this week.

Sheriff's spokesman Dan Moon says officers discovered the remains on Monday.

The home owner, Loney L. Garrett has been charged with ill treatment of animals.

Moon says it appears some of the animals died from neglect. But he says a number of the dogs had been shot.

Volunteers with Animal Rescue & Relief of the Carolinas are trying to save as many of the 45 dogs as they can. The group took the surviving dogs from the property Sunday.

It was unclear if Garrett has a lawyer.
