A major traffic change is coming to a deadly intersection in Darlington County.

Since 2005, there have been 26 crashes at the intersection of Hoffmeyer Road and Highway 401 between Hartsville and Florence, according to officials with the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

Officials say many of the crashes were right angle crashes.

Last June, Bailey "Bayy" Eaddy, 15, of Hartsville was killed at the intersection.

Highway Patrol says the car she was riding in ran a stop sign and crashed into a pick up truck.

Troopers say Bailey was thrown from the car and died.

Transportation officials added that the high number of crashes prompted them to do something to improve safety at the intersection.

In March, crews will build a traffic circle to replace the intersection.

DOT says that will force drivers to show down and should reduce crashes by 75 percent.

"It's just been too many crashes at that intersection. I think that whatever they can do, then they need to do it. No matter how much it cost," said Scott Roberton of Darlington County.

The project is expected to cost about $740,000 and be finished at the end of August.
