Brent Egan Dotson, 57, was convicted of Criminal Sexual Conduct with a Minor Under 11 Wednesday in an Horry County courtroom, even though he failed to show up for his own trial, according to prosecutor Candice Lively.

Dotson was also found guilty of Lewd Act on a Minor.

Dotson was dating the victim's grandmother, when the victim said he molested her between 2009 and 2010, according to Lively.

He was arrested in May of 2011.

Lively tried to bring the case against Dotson to trial in September, but Dotson had a medical excuse so it was rescheduled for December.

At a court roll call in November, Dotson failed to appear and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest, Lively said.

Dotson's trial was scheduled for December 12, and the judge went ahead with the trial even though Dotson failed to show.

Because Dotson wasn't there to be sentenced in person, the sentence is sealed. That means he can't yet be entered into the state's sex offender registry.

Dotson has been convicted of a violent offense so that requires he be placed on the registry for life, Lively said.

Lively considers him to be a dangerous individual and wanted to make sure his picture got out to the public.
