Coastal Carolina senior basketball guard Danny Nieman has been indefinitely removed from the team effective immediately after being arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence and Hit and Run on Thursday night. He was booked at J. Reuben Long Detention Center at 11:50 pm on Thursday with charges of no South Carolina Driver's License, DUI, Hit and Run/Duties of Driver Involved in Accident/Property Damage. His bond totaled $1,471.50.
Nieman was suspended for the fall semester of 2011 for a violation of the University's code of conduct. He was arrested on July 2nd, 2011 for having an open container of alcohol in his car. On August 5th 2009, he was charged with felony possession with intent to sell or distribute marijuana, felony sell or deliver marijuana and misdemeanor paraphernalia possession charge. Two of those felonies were dropped when he pled guilty to the paraphernalia possession charge. He was fined $300, served community service and served 12 months probation.
Nieman averaged 4.4 points and 2.0 assists a game playing the second half of the 2011/12 season for head coach Cliff Ellis. He averaged 26.7 minutes per game. In his CCU career, he scored 512 points and dished out 244 assists. He was expected to be a key to the Chants backcourt along with returners Kierre Greenwood and Anthony Raffa. Coastal Carolina held their first practice of the season on Friday.
