Everett Golson was late for practice, then led the Irish to victory over Miami on Saturday night.
Tommy Rees started at quarterback for 9th ranked Notre Dame against the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday night at Soldier Field in Chicago, after Everett Golson, a product of Myrtle Beach High, was benched for a violation of team rules. The Associated Press reported late Saturday that Golson showed up late for a practice.
The Golson benching did not last long. After Rees threw two incomplete passes on Notre Dame's opening drive, Golson took the Irish down the field for a touchdown.
With Golson at the controls for more than three quarters, Notre Dame went on to beat Miami 41-3. Golson completed 17 of 22 passes for 186 yards. He also ran for 51 yards. The Irish played near flawless football, with no turnovers.
After Golson guided the Irish to a 34-3 lead, Rees came back in the game to mop up.
Notre Dame is 12-4 with Rees as its starting quarterback. But the junior lost his job to Golson after being arrested in May for a skirmish with police following an off-campus party. He was suspended for the season opener.
