On Wednesday night, Matt Cain became the 22nd player in major league history to throw a perfect game when he silenced the Houston Astros in a 10-0 win. The game had two local angles to it.
Dustin Johnson was on hand to throw out the first pitch. Johnson is in San Francisco for the US Open. The former Coastal Carolina All-American hit golf balls from home plate into the famed McCovey's cove in right field. Cain hit one drive into the cove as well during the pre-game demonstration.

As for the perfect game, one of the key moments came in the seventh inning. Two former Myrtle Beach Pelicans played a big part in the storyline of Cain's perfect game. Jordan Shaffer, who played for the Birds in 2008, nearly laced a double earlier in the game that was just foul. Leading off the top of the 7th, he rocketed a Cain pitch into the gap in right center field. Gregor Blanco, who played in Myrtle Beach in 2003 and 2004, made a diving catch to keep the perfect game intact.
