Florence native Harry Carson was inducted into the Black College Football Hall of Fame on Saturday night in Atlanta. The former Wilson High star was among 11 players and coaches from historically black colleges who were honored during an enshrinement banquet.
Carson was two-time defensive player of the year in the MEAC while playing college football at South Carolina State. He later went on to the NFL to play linebacker for the New York Giants. Carson was a nine-time pro bowl selection and member of the Super Bowl XXI Champions. He played high school football for the Wilson Tigers.
Joining Carson in the 2012 class of inductees were DB Willie Brown of Grambling, QB Eldridge Dickey of Tennessee State, QB James Harris of Grambling, DL Claude Humphrey of Tennessee State, QB Steve McNair of Alcorn State, WR Willie Richardson of Jackson State, DB Johnny Sample of Maryland-Eastern Shore, OL Rayfield Wright of Fort Valley State, Coach Cleve Abbott of Tuskegee and Jackie Graves, a former scout and personnel director for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Last month, Carson was recognized as "Man of the Year" by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.
