Coastal Carolina's David Duran has been granted a sixth year of eligiblity by the NCAA.  The tight end transferred to Coastal from Michigan State as a redshirt freshman and played at CCU from 2009-2011.  He suffered a shoulder injury after four games last season and was granted a medical waiver by the NCAA to play for new head coach Joe Moglia in 2012.

Duran was a pre-season All-American in 2011 and will be considered one of the top tight ends in FCS and an NFL prospect.

CONWAY – Coastal Carolina All-American tight end David Duran, who graduated from the University this past December, has been granted an extension of eligibility waiver by the Big South Conference and NCAA.

A first team preseason All-American heading into the 2011 season, Duran played sparingly for the Chanticleers as a fifth-year senior this past fall before ultimately having season-ending surgery on his shoulder. In four games this past season, he caught five passes for 75 yards. He needs just two more receptions to become the first tight end in Big South history to have 60 career catches. (Gardner-Webb’s Josh Miller owns the Big South record for career catches by a tight end with 59.)

For his three-year Coastal Carolina career, Duran has 58 receptions in 27 games for 820 yards and three touchdowns. He ranks sixth in the CCU career receiving yards list and seventh in career receptions.

The Marietta, Ga., native was named second team All-American by Phil Steele in 2010 and earned his second consecutive first team All-Big South selection. For the second straight year, he led all Big South tight ends in both receptions and receiving yards, while ranking fifth (tied) in the nation among tight ends in receptions. His 34 receptions in 2010 is fourth on the CCU single-season list, while his 472 receiving yards ranks eighth on the school’s single-season list.

Duran began his career at Michigan State, redshirting his true freshman season due to injury.  As a redshirt freshman, Duran saw action in four games, including each of the final three, catching a pass versus Penn State in the Spartans’ 2008 season finale.

Duran, who earned Dean’s List recognition this past semester, received his degree in Recreation and Sport Management.
