Alex Krall's 41 yard field goal with ten seconds remaining gave the Timberland Wolves an 18-15 upset victory on Friday night at Dillon Memorial Stadium. The Wildcats played the game with a heavy heart. Earlier in the day, Dillon senior Jake David's funeral was held. The tight end was killed in a one car accident on Wednesday.
Dillon fell behind in the first as Wolves quarterback completed a 60 yard TD to Mike Wilson, who wrestled the ball away from a Dillon defender to put Timberland in front 6-0. Krall would boot a 36 yard field goal to make it a 9-0 game at the half. Dillon answered back in the third quarter as South Carolina Gamecock commitment Kwinton Smith made a 21 yard leaping catch to make it a 9-7 game. Later in the third, Joe Blue scored from two yards out and Smith grabbed a two point conversion to pace Dillon to a 15-9 lead.
With 2:58 to go in the fourth quarter, Lee Mayes made a 32 yard TD grab on 4th and 27 and it appeared that Timberland was going to take the lead, but Archie Gilchrist blocked the field goal to make it a 15-15 game. Dillon QB Thomas Grossetti threw an interception on the ensuing drive setting the stage for Krall to boot the game winner from 41 yards out.
Dillon finishes the year 12-1, while Timberland is now 13-1 and advances to the 2A Division I state championship next week at Benedict College in Columbia.
