(AP) -- NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP) - School officials have announced that Newberry College will go without a nickname for the next academic year as part of an agreement with the NCAA.  Newberry College President Mick Zais said Wednesday the school would spend about $118,000 to remove its "Indians" name from signs, uniforms and athletic equipment.  The (Columbia) State reported earlier Wednesday that trustees made the decision last week.  Newberry had been on the NCAA's list of schools that could have faced penalties for using nicknames or mascots considered offensive.  The school had reached an agreement with the NCAA in November 2006, giving Newberry two years to compete in NCAA championships without penalty for use of the nickname or arrowhead and spear logos.

What ever happen to "Freedom of Speech?"

It is really sad that a handfull of people can cost so much hate and discontent. I'm almost half native american and I see nothing wrong with Newberry College being called the "Indians". I think people should be proud to have their heritage associated with an institution of higher learning and with sports. The Indians were known to be a proud, brave people who fought well when pressed. Today's fights are on the sports fields. I think we should also remember that to guarentee one group of people their rights we are almost for sure denying another group theirs. How do we choose whose rights are the most important? In a democratic society the majority should rule. Are we still a democratic society?

Newberry Trustees cave to P.C.

Dear Sirs: When will you ever stop caving in to the assault upon white, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant culture. Let the NCAA "drop dead". So what if they sue. So what if they threaten you with penalties? Don't you have a Constitution? Couldn't you counter-sue? Or, have you surrendered that to them also. Would you draw the line anywhere? Is there anything you would fight for? Would you have have been the first one to leave the Alamo when Colonel Travis drew an line in the sand?
Your culture should be more important to you than your athletic program, a mascot or someone's panti-waist politics of Political Correctness. And if you cannot or will not defend your culture, you should leave the country. I am sickened of men who will not defend our country and institutions which we inherited.
"Well, we inherited slavery. Shall we defend that also," I thought I heard you ask? Fine, but we'll compare nations with nations, histories with histories and cultures with cultures. But we will not compare Tolstoy with "Bull" Connor. Wake up---and defend our culture.
So what if someone is offended. Is there a Constitutional right not to be offended. Someone is going to be offended if we breathe. Furthermore, if the "right" not to be offended is valid, then I am offended by the proposed removal of the "Indian" mascot. This offends me. So, jump through whatever hoops are necessary to insure that I am not offended by your [thoughts] and actions. Yours truly, Sam Page.
