A problem with an air conditioning unit caused smoke damage at the Bennettsville Federal Prison, according to the Bennettsville City Fire Department.
Officials say a call came into the Marlboro County 911 Communications Center of smoke coming from the prison's recreational building on Muckerman Road just after 7:00 Wednesday night.
Firefighters say an employee was doing random checks when he noticed the smoke.
It appears a belt burned off the air conditioning unit, causing a lot of smoke.
The situation was under control within 15 minutes, according to firefighters.
